About artwork: The square is a fundamental shape which many artists use to work with. It is a shape many people respond to in terms of its comforting symmetry and regularity of form. It forms the basic structure of a grid which is the underlying framework that many artists use to make paintings. It offers endless possibilities for exploration and variations on a theme. The resulting works can be as minimalist or complicated as the artist wishes. One of the most famous proponents of the use of the square was Josef Albers, the German artist and educator at The Bauhaus. In his “Hommage to the Square” series of works, begun in 1950 and ending when he died in 1976, it gave him a framework for endless exploration of his theories of colour and the interaction of colours, without the distraction of different shapes or forms. The influence of the Bauhaus is timeless and underpins much of what surrounds us in terms of visual culture today. My interpretation of the square series of works is a contemporary play on the interactions of colour and a hommage to the work of Josef Albers and the Bauhaus. The calming muted shape of the large square is offset by the use of small squares of fluorescent colour to create a dynamic visual presence.
